Avian Flu Disinfection Methods

To disinfect areas contaminated with avian influenza (H5N1), it's necessary to use proper cleaning and disinfection methods to effectively kill the virus and prevent its spread. As the H5N1 is an enveloped virus, it is susceptible to numerous disinfectants and disinfection methods.  ITS Incorporates the following methods to achieve the best possible outcome:

1. Use of Personal Protective Equipment (PPE)

The following Personal Protective Equipment should be donned during disinfection procedures:

  • Disposable gloves

  • Protective clothing (gown or disposable coveralls)

  • Face mask (N95 or half face mask with P100 filter or)

  • Eye protection (goggles or face shield)

  • Shoe or boot covers

2. Cleaning and Disinfection Process

Step 1: Remove Organic Material

  • Clean first: The virus can survive in organic materials like bird droppings, feathers, and dirt.

  • Use detergent and water: Scrub surfaces with warm, soapy water to remove debris before applying disinfectants. Direct agitation of most areas is necessary to disrupt any existing biofilm.

Step 2: Apply an Effective Disinfectant

Avian influenza viruses are sensitive to common disinfectants when used correctly.

Effective Options Include:

  • Green disinfectants (food prep safe)

  • Alcohol solutions (at least 70% ethanol or isopropyl alcohol)

Bleach Solution (Sodium Hypochlorite):

  • Mix: 1 part household bleach (5.25%–6% sodium hypochlorite) with 9 parts water (1:9 dilution).

  • Contact time: Leave on the surface for at least 10 minutes before rinsing.

  • Hydrogen peroxide (3%)

  • Quaternary ammonium compounds

  • Iodophors

Step 3: Warm water rinse/dry

  • After disinfection, rinse surfaces with warm clean water (especially on food contact or food preparation surfaces).

  • Allow the area to air dry.

3. Engineering and Safety Controls

  • Ventilation: Ensure the area is ventilated during the cleaning and disinfection process.

  • Waste Disposal: Dispose of contaminated materials (gloves, disposable cloths, bird remains) in sealed plastic bags and follow local biohazard waste guidelines.  Composting, landfill or incineration in an enclosed facility

  • Hygiene: Wash hands thoroughly with soap and water after removing PPE.

4. Special Concerns and High-Risk Areas

  • Poultry Farms: Strict biosecurity measures are essential. Vehicles, equipment, and footwear should be disinfected regularly.

  • Live Bird Markets: Frequent cleaning and disinfection of cages, surfaces, and equipment are critical to prevent outbreaks.
